What time is it in South Dakota? This is a commonly asked question — but this question requires a question in return — where in South Dakota?

South Dakota actually has 2 time zones — the Mountain and Central Time Zones to be exact. As a general rule, one could say that South Dakota is split down the middle with the western half (left side) being in the Mountain Time Zone while the eastern half (right side) being in the Central Time Zone.

What Time Is It In South Dakota? There Are 2 Time Zones

There are, in total, 66 counties in South Dakota. Of these 66 counties, 15 are 100% in the Mountain Time Zone while 50 counties are 100% in the Central Time Zone. Most on Stanley County is located in the Mountain Time Zone but a small portion of Stanley County is located in the Central Time Zone.

Although 50 counties (75% of the counties in South Dakota) are located in the Central Time Zone, these counties are smaller in size compared to the 16 counties, if you include Stanley County, that are located in the Mountain Time Zone. Thus, although fewer counties are in the Mountain Time Zone, South Dakota is still split approximately down the middle between the Mountain and Central Time Zones.

From a geographical point of view, South Dakota stretches from approximately 96° West to 104° West. Thus, South Dakota spans approximately 8° of longitude. As a general rule, all counties west of 101° West longitude are in the Mountain Time Zone. With this realization we can see how, from a geographical point of view, approximately 1/2 of South Dakota is in the Mountain Time Zone even if 75% of its counties are in the Central Time Zone.

Corson County and Dewey County are not entirely west of 101° West, yet these two counties are 100% in the Mountain Time Zone.
