Time Zone Names and Time Zone Abbreviations

Saturday, September 21, 2013 by — creator of Time Genie

Updated: Monday, April 11, 2016

Although convenient in many ways, time zone names and abbreviations are not official nor are they standardized. As a result, there can be confusion with time zone names and abbreviations. An example would be EST which standards for Eastern Standard Time. But does this refer to the USA, Canada or Australia? All 3 countries use this abbreviation and time zone name.

So while time zone names and abbreviations are interesting, if you really want to ensure someone knows what time zone you are referring to, it is best to use the GMT offset.

The following information on this page divides time zones into 2 charts. The first chart is for standard times and the second chart is for daylight saving time (also known as summer time).

When you carefully review the charts, you will notice duplicate abbreviations. The duplications are not a mistake. This is a result of no standardized time zone names.
