What time is it in Saskatchewan? This is a commonly asked question — but this question requires a question in return — where in Saskatchewan?

Saskatchewan actually has 2 time zones — the Mountain and Central Time zones to be exact. However, most of Saskatchewan uses the Central Time zone.

Many believe, think or have been told that all of Saskatchewan uses Central Standard Time (GMT -6 time zone) all year and does not observe daylight saving time. For the majority of Saskatchewan, this is correct, but there are locations that do observe daylight saving time — both in the Mountain and Central Time zones.

There are no unofficial time zones used in Saskatchewan.

What Time Is It In Saskatchewan? There Are 2 Time Zones

For the most part, all of Saskatchewan uses the Central Time zone all year (GMT -6 time zone) and does not observe daylight saving time. This include major locations in Saskatchewan such as Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina and Saskatoon.

Where time zones begin to be different in Saskatchewan is when you get closer to the provincial borders — either Alberta or Manitoba. This rule does not apply to every location, instead, only a handful.

The most signficant city or town to not use the Central Time zone is Lloydminster. The city of Lloydminster is unusual in that the city actually straddles the provincial borders of Alberta and Saskatchewan due to a surveying error in the early 1900's. As a result, 1/2 of the city is in Alberta while the other half is in Saskatchewan. Since Alberta uses the Mountain Time zone while most of Saskatchewan uses Central Standard Time, which time zone should be used? The answer is the Mountain Time zone.

Although many know that Lloydminster uses the Mountain Time zone, what many don't know is that 2 towns close to Lloydminster also choose to use the Mountain Time zone. These 2 towns are Maidstone and Waseca.

When one journeys towards the provincial border with Manitoba, a similar thing begins to happen — two towns located close to a neighboring town in Manitoba choose to use the same time zone as Manitoba, that is, the Central Time zone but with the use of daylight saving time. The two towns are Creighton and Denare Beach.

Both Creighton and Denare Beach choose to observe daylight saving time due to their reliance on the nearby neighboring town of Flin Flon, Manitoba. Similar to Lloydminster, Flin Flon straddles the border of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. But unlike Lloydminster, the vast majority of Flin Flon is located within the borders of Manitoba.

Did You Know — Saskatchewan Is Largely Agricultural

Did you knowMany don't understand why Saskatchewan does not observe daylight saving time like the rest of North America?

The answer or reason is really quite simple — Saskatchewan is essentially an agricultural province. As a result, the farmers prefer to work by when the sun rises. By not observing daylight saving time, the farmers are working earlier in the morning and not later into the night.
