What time is it in Nunavut? This is a commonly asked question — but this question requires a question in return — where in Nunavut?

Nunavut actually spans 3 time zones — the Mountain, Central and Eastern Time zones to be exact. Additionally, one location in Nunavut does not observe daylight saving time.

There are no unofficial time zones used in Nunavut.

What Time Is It In Nunavut? There Are 3 Time Zones

Since April, 2001, Nunavut has been using 3 time zones. Approximately 40% of Nunavut uses the Eastern Time Zone, another 40% uses the Mountain Time zone and about 20% uses the Central Time zone.

From October 31, 1999 until April, 2001, Nunavut actually only had 1 time zone — the Central Time zone. Later, on October 29, 2000, Nunavut changed its single time zone from Central to Eastern time.

The purpose of the single time zone was to essentially help unify Nunavut. However, as a staff member at the National Research Council of Canada told Time Genie, the single time zone was rather awkard especially for communities in western Nunavut. This was due to the fact that many of the transportation links were, and still are, north to south. Thus, using 3 time zones allows communites in Nunavut to be in harmony with the time zone of provinces and cities directly south.

A map showing the time zones of Canada
Map showing time zones of Canada When looking at the map, Nunavut is essentially at the top of the map and is divided into 3 time zones. The yellow section indicates the Eastern Time zone, the red indicates the Central Time zone while the purple indicates the Mountain Time zone. There is also an island, at the top of Hudson Bay that is highlighted in a brighter yellow. This is Southampton Island — the location of Coral Harbour. Southampton Island is the only part of Nunavut that does not observe daylight saving time.

Time Zone Rules

Nunavut is divided into 3 time zones using the following rules:

Eastern Time:

→ Locations east of 85° West use Eastern Time Zone.

Central Time:

→ Locations between 85° West and 102° West use Central Time Zone.

Mountain Time:

→ Locations west of 102° West use Mountain Time Zone. This includes all communities in the Kitikmeot Region

Based on the above rules, the hamlet of Arctic Bay should be in the Central Time zone since its longitude is 085° 08’ 30” West. Essentially, Arctic Bay is 08’ 30” into the Central Time zone. But since Arctic Bay is located on Baffin Island and since all other locations on Baffin Island use the Eastern Time zone, it has been determined that Arctic Bay should also be in the Eastern Time zone so it remains in harmony with the other hamlets and towns on Baffin Island.

Daylight Saving Time

All of Nunavut observes daylight saving time (DST) except for Southampton Island. The main settlement on Southampton Island is Coral Harbour which remains on Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5 time zone) all year.

Daylight saving time (DST) schedule:

→ At 2 AM local time, clocks are advanced 1 hour on the second Sunday in March.

→ At 2 AM local time, clocks go back 1 hour on the first Sunday in November.

Locations That Do Not Observe Daylight Saving Time

As mentioned, the only location that does not observe daylight saving time in Nunavut is Southampton Island.

Did You Know — At One Point, Nunavut Had 4 Time Zones?

Did you knowPrior to the use of single time zone, Nunavut actually had 4 time zones — the fourth time zone being the Atlantic Time zone.

When Nunavut did away with its single time zone, it also did away with its fourth time zone. As a result, Nunavut now only has 3 time zones.
